an open challenge to all them laptop dj types...

A favour, if you please... could one of the 7 million kids messing around with acid dj/abelton/mix meister/etc doing those endless new rave meets Baltimore club remixes get to work and mess up a track for me?
The track (which I acknowledge is uber-lame):
- Crystal Waters - Gypsy Woman [mp3]
Here, I'll even get you started with the breaks:
- Gaz - Sing Sing Break [wav]
Yeah, the track is played out but (1) I heard it last week while out for drinks with Tk and the keyboard riff has been stuck in my head ever since, (2) if people can get worked up over Beach Boy tracks over looped breaks... I can be self indulgent and ask for an early 90's dance floor track to be redone. Can't I?

fastest 24 update ever: *sigh*

Jebus. If this guy doesn't get vengefully shot a la Nina Myers in season 3 or Alex Murphy in Robocop, I'm giving up on this show.

the CN tower belongs to the dead...

Home. Finally. After 2 weeks of being on the road, I'm ready to camp out on my couch for 459 years. I wish you could tell you that my travels were for something inspired like vacation or bands or whatever... but it was for the day job. Meaning, I'm ready to decompress for a year. Also, I'm ready to stop seeing powerpoint slides in my sleep. Could someone fix that for me?
With that said, I did manage to have a bit of fun... I've fully explored the Keg in Mississauga (Airport Road, represent), and I did manage to make it into toronto for about 18 hours... and from what I can recall, I had a pretty good time... financial district seemed cool and I may or may not have entered into a vodka martini drinking competition with Ichi the guitar hero. I think I have the receipt somewhere in my suitcase to prove it. Also, Ichi, sorry about the running man incident.
Sidebar: when I drove into toronto one of the first thing I saw was a Brad Lamb billboard. Heh.
Anyways, regular blogging starts up this weekend. Whoot.

my label made don newkirk, step to him...
While this might be old hat to you yankies down south, they just started playing The White Rapper Show on Much in Canada. I'm trying my best not to get into it, but I've "accidentally" caught 2 episodes, and I've drawn these 2 conclusions:

1. This man is retarded. Seriously.

2. MC Serch has aged surprisingly well. I hope that somewhere out there Pete Nice is keeping up
That is all.
Actually...
Thematically linked but not realated...
Hark! I've stumbled upon the best worst rap album cover ever:

Nope, not a photoshop... google it up if you don't believe.

reviewed: silversun pickups at richard's

Because I'm still in Calgary I had to forfeit my tickets for last night's show. Tk still managed to go though. Here’s her report back via email.
Hiiiii. Siliversun Pickups didn't start until 11:30... after a FOURTY FIVE MINUTE break between bands. They played the same 4 bars of some hideous organ music during that time and the crowd was actually booing and getting really mad. When the band came out, the guy was all "it's called 'atmosphere,' dude." I wanted to punch him in the face. I went home after 4 songs because I was super frustrated with that little a-hole. And I was exhausted. The middle opening band was good though. I don't know who they were.
I believe said middle band in question was Sea Wolf... which features that guy from Irving. Here's a sampling:
Ted Leo next week... that guy delivers every time.

weekend recap: let's all pretend we're classy edition...

I enjoy the fact that after all these years you can still dress us up, take us out somewhere nice, feed us beautiful food, but we'll still be a total shit show and sneak in shots of jager between courses... and then collectively rock an after party until all hours.
I'm too wrecked to expand on JWC #6 details right now... but will post photos later.
Sidebar: how come there are zero taxi's in Calgary? I thought the streets were paved with gold here these days... why no gold plated taxis any time after 9:15pm?

the april mixtape is online...

It's way past my bedtime, so theoretically this will be brief...
If last month's mix was my post vacation quasi-mellow mix, then this month's mix is my speaker shaking spring time jump-off mix. Lots of songs, with lots of teeth... a solid mix of indie jangle, with a bit of dense math rock, and electronic meets hip hop stuff... yeah, there a couple of more gentle tracks carefully snuck into the middle of the set, but I needed to hear that Wilco disk a bit more in order to figure out if it's any good... plus, who can resist Amy Millan covering DCFC?
It's a gooder... and as always, it's a limited time offer. Get on it.

the year so far in audio...

The first quarter of the year has come and gone.
My favorite disk so far: The Apples In Stereo - New Magnetic Wonder.
People often say that The New Pornographers create perfect pop songs... but to me, New Magnetic Wonder is the perfect pop album. The normally obvious 60's influences found in Apples In Stereo tracks are dialed down a bit and the fuzz is turned up. Everything sounds optimistic, tight, and punchy. Oh and for me, the instances of vocoder, Mellotron, and Hilarie Sidney on lead vocals are just extra gravy.
A sampling for skeptical:
- The Apples In Stereo - 7 Stars [mp3]
Apparently, Apples In Stereo played the Media Club this week... did anyone go?
