2 things...

(img source)
1. The new Girl Talk album came out today online. You probably are either really excited by this or really could care less (there seems to be no middle ground). Either way, here it is. Pay what you want.
2. In about 2 hours I'm calling it a week and heading to Las Vegas for my stag. INSERT OBVIOUS REFERENCE TO IMPENDING LIVER DAMAGE HERE. But, seriously y'all(s)... yikes, my liver.
I've got a pretty solid team of boys rolling with me down there. There's 8 of us. Should be fantastic. I've been told we're going to a shooting range. I've made it clear that I want to fire a bazooka. Dave's come through on stuff like this before... so here's hoping.
Since there are a lot of guys who were invited and can't go for a variety of reasons, I've come up with the admittedly dumb idea of providing stag party updates via twitter. I'm gonna try to keep this up until either (1) I loose my phone, (2) I loose interest, (3) The Deuce reminds me that Twitter is the web equivalent of Randy Newman on The Family Guy.
Either way, follow along here.

adventures in fake dj'ing: LAZR BASS edition...

This mix kinda came outta nowhere...
This morning I upgraded my fake DJ software and then started playing with a bunch of random mp3s randomly left on my desktop. I wasn't really going for anything in particular, nor did I have plans of publishing this mix, but I like the way it turned out... it's a nice collection of electro de jour type tunes complete with lots of heavy distorted synthy-bass (aka LAZR BASS!!1).
Most of the bands in the mix are everywhere these days (and sorta done to death?). The set feels kinda disposable, but that's what makes it work... it's a nice, brainless, pick-me-up. It's the sorta mix that should be played on a Friday night at some point between when you leave work and when you (finally) go to bed.
The set list (total time = 40 minutes):
MGMT - Electric Feel (Nate Wize RMX)
A-Trak - Knucklehead
We Are Scientists - Chick Lit (Danger TV Remix Edit)
Blackstreet - No Diggity (Skeet Skeet Remix)
Digitalism - Idealistic (A-Trak Remix)
Justice - DVNO
Anoraak - Nightdrive With You (GRUM's New Wave Remix)
Martina Topley Bird - Poison (Van She Mix)
Revolte - Guess What
Klaxons - As Above, So Below (Justice Remix)
*Download the mp3 here* [54MB, right click & save-as]
Or better yet, subscribe to the fake dj set podcast here. (full details can be found here).
PS: If I ever put another Justice or A-Trak track/remix into one of my sets, you are welcome to stab me with a plastic fork.

underachievers, please try harder...

Come on Rogers, you're about to launch the most coveted wireless device in the history of humankind* and all you can do is post a totally vague teaser image on your website. Not even an image of the actual product, just some generic device. No actual content about the device, or plans, or pricing, or how the sun will shine everyday if you own the phone.
You've got a license to print money for the next year (at least) and this is how you seize it? Yikes.
* not being a fanboy, I'm just being honest.

june mixtape = finally ready...

I'm just gonna say it... I really like how this month's tape turned out.
I usually try to pull together a set that spans all kinds of tempos, moods, and genres... but this one sticks with mid tempo vocal driven stuff like Tilly & The Wall, Bing Ji Ling, and Electric President. Not like that's a bad thing... this kind of sounding stuff is perfect music for this time of year.
Anyways:
As always, it's a limited time offer. Giddyup.

and now, again, we revist stuff that was cool 2 years ago...

My laptop is dying. Really. I keep getting messages saying the hard drive is about to implode on itself. Which is fine, I guess. The thing is 4 years old and has been running almost 24/7 since the day I bought it.
So now I'm scrambling to get a bunch of stuff done on it before it totally implodes. One of the things I've been meaning to do was create a compilation album based on all those Yacht Rock shorts. Yes, I realize that Yacht Rock was sooooo 3 years ago, but during a recent boozey weekend with Maddog we watched the entire series 3 times and it was still fresh comedic gold. Especially Episode 11.
I've pulled together 12 of the most notable tunes used in the series... lots of Michael McDonald, Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan, Kenny Loggins and the like. I even threw in a couple of sounds clips from the show (yes, I am a huge nerd).
This compilation was gong to be for my own use, but I figured I'd share it for a couple of reasons: (1) readily available Yacht Rock compilation torrents seem to have dried up, (2) everyone loves a download (3) it's BBQ season and really smooooooth music might just be the perfect soundtrack.
Download:
FUN FACT: It's impossible to track down a digital copy of "Portable Radio" by Hall & Oates on the internet (legally or illegally).
