fax of life...

Remember those GI Joe Remixed PSAs?

These are funnier.

If you only have time for a couple of the clips watch Knight Rider, Doogie Howser, and Facts of Life. But, really, I suggest sticking around for all of them.

binge linking...

Awesomeness: thesearepowerfulhours.com.

A plethora of themed mixtapes, each of which contain 1 minute clips of 100 songs, for - what else? - drinking games. Where was this site 6 years ago when I was actually doing Centurions on a quasi-regular basis?! Houseboats, represent.

Actually, the French House mix is real nice on the merits of the selected tracks alone. If you were so inclined, you could load the mix into itunes, create a playlist, cross fade in and our of each track, and POW! you've got an hour and a half weekend warm up soundtrack.

Just make sure you've got a beer handy... you know, to keep your frat street cred.

we rulez teh internets (apparently)...

Traffic on the olde vanmega.com is through the roof... as it is every late October. Apparently, our ancient posts here and here on quagmire, mugatu, and Sandy Cohen's eyebrow costumes are of interest. It's a shame we don't actually explain how to make these costumes. I'm telling you, though the hot look for Halloween 2007 is the cabbagehead costume. It's obscure, it's cost effective. All you need is a cabbage and a roll of duct tape and you're good to go. Think about it.

Here are some very hyper/non Halloween-related links:

  • matt has a heap of live mp3's from the Halifax pop explosion

  • the mix: notable notes from the 90's. Surprizingly good set of 10 - 15 year old (alt?)rock... except for the 90210 stuff. Maybe.

  • I'm being stone cold dissed on the internet! well, my swimming abilities are. Jon, for the record, I can swim... just not for long or gracefully. next time your in vancouver... we're having a race in the pool. Maybe.

  • pinder has a tumblr. expect the posts to be entertaining as hell, but updated quarterly.

  • while I promised myself that I wouldn't blog about that Sasha Frere-Jones essay which was HALF-ASSED + POINTLESS, it is interesting to note that Will Butler from The Arcade Fire has responded... in mp3 format, no less.

  • ok, one Halloween related link: there are a million Halloween-related gigs/parties this week in vancouver. vancouver_indie has all the listings

Beh! My feed reader has been broken for the last week. I feel disconnected and, in turn, you get links which interested me whilst manually (gasp, I knows!) clicking around teh webs:

smoke detector...

Stop streaming that new and totally meh-ish Rilo Kiley disk, and download these goodies instead:
  • Ben Lee covering Against Me!'s New Wave. In it's entirety. He's offering it for download here.

  • Nick Catchdubs & DJ Ayres just put out a rock mix ( no "perennial joints you always hear"... no "achingly new blog music". Download here.

  • A bootleg of Daft Punk in Brooklyn, NY. The encore is sublime. Download here.

  • A bootleg of Ryan Adams & The Cardinals live at the Gem Theatre. Download here.

[Insert ironic reference about putting downloaded files into a tape player and thus tying post together]

no books... [updated]

JOY! It appears that the nonstuff podcast has come back from the dead.

As I've mentioned before, hands down this is the best podcast on the interwebnet as we know it. It's a short weekly mix of indie/alternative/whatever songs, most of which vary in obscurity. Or at least, these dudes aren't posting from the same pool of songs most other music blogs do. There's variety, there's something unique going on. It feels like a really well done college radio show... minus the awkward college kid banter, of course. Get up on it.

---

BOO! Hey, you going to that Ryan Adams show at The Orpheum on Saturday Sunday? You're most likely screwed. Quinn's reporting that the building will be shut down because of the city strike. There's talk of moving the venue, but no official work has come out from HOB or ryan-adams.com. Your plan B: get out there an see some local bands tear it up at your bar of choice.

UPDATE: It's officially been moved to the Commodore. Doors at 7, show at 8. General admission. Aren't you glad you paid extra for floor seats.
